This movie has no idea how Wicca/Wiccans work. Wicca's a religion, so being 1/16th Wiccan is like saying you're 1/16th Christian or something. Plus, while the film tries to depict Velma as somewhat knowing about Wicca, but in that case, she should have called BS on Ben's claims about Sarah. Sarah Ravencroft was according to this film active in 1657 when from what I can tell, Wicca wasn't around anywhere near then. My research says it was started in England in the first part of 20th century and introduced to the public in 1954 by Gerald Gardner.
ReplyDeleteAlso,I should point out Ben did say Sarah wasn't a Wiccan, but indeed a witch while the Wiccans were the good people who sealed her away.
Yeah, but if Wiccans weren't witches, how did they have the ability to seal Sarah away in the first place?
DeleteThey learned it from a guy from Myst Island...
DeleteActually, it's possible they just learned the sealing spell and thought it was an appropriate punishment, like they saw it in the pages somewhere. We don't know how the actual battle went. Shaggy and Scooby don't know any magic but we've seen them utilize it in later movies and 13 Ghosts. Witches in the Scoobyverse may just be people who practice magic, unlike the wizards of Harry Potter's world where you have to have the gift.
Because of two possible reasons.
DeleteOne could due to the fact that a from what I've read has said that Wicca has some connections to Pagan witchcraft.
The other is the movie's incredibly stupid and doesn't even know that they have Wicca existing several centuries too early.
The fact that Wiccans are misunderstood doesn't mean there weren't practicing witches (whether they actually perform magic or not) and warlocks. The fact that they acknowledge the difference is a positive. Of course the witch trials were often used on people who were neither, sometimes out of revenge or just superstitious ignorance.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I think they were trying to say that some kids are like good witches and there are bad witches and I think they were trying to say that the good work persecuted with the bad also for return zombie Island and the curse of the 13th ghost at least for return they at least hint that it’s more to do with Velma trying to get rid of anything that doesn’t fit into our worldview and rec on you to be to not happen because there is a real catCreature in that movie everything is implied that only Velma believes there wasn’t anything supernatural in there games does believe it was real

ReplyDeleteIf you ever decide to check out Scooby Doo And The Curse Of The 13th Ghost, I recommend checking out this podcast that Tim Sheridan took part in. What he said at 25:00 is of particular note.
Can't believe you left out the best exchange of dialogue in the movie:
ReplyDelete"Shaggy, grab the book!"
"Book!? Can't we just wait for the movie!?"
Also, I don't think Fred thought Sally's real name was Thorn, but that he was surprised her real name was Sally. It doesn't sound fitting for one of the Hex Girls don't ya think?
I'm with you about how the movie treats Wiccans. I personally don't have a problem with it, but I'm sure other people, especially other Wiccans, would. Makes me think this movie wouldn't be made today because of that. Not in our current age of Tumblr.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I know this movie reminds you of Hocus Pocus, but personally, it's giving me Paranorman vibes. Both movies do involve the ghosts of women who were killed for being witches, though obviously, it goes without saying, Paranorman did the concept way better.
