15-Year Anniversary Review: Kiki's Delivery Service from Not The Hero on Vimeo.
In which a review I thought would be relatively simple ended up being far more of a monster than I thought it would be...hopefully, this review's length makes up for how long it took to come out!
I remember the trailer of this movie.
ReplyDeleteI saw this years ago and story wise Kiki is a bit weak for a witch in her world. At the beginning we saw her mother can make potions and the other witch we meet is a fortune teller. The only power Kiki has is to fly, which all witches can do. I always thought her future talent should've been the way she save the day at the end. Despite that a excellent film that should be watched by all.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind addition or alterations to the script, as long as it improves the characters and story, like FUNimation's English Dub for Dragon Ball Z. In one of the filler pieces, Vegeta is easily defeated by a meteor in a flashback, and in the FUNimation Dub, he states he was exhausted from Gravity Training, which explained why he was taken down. This info wasn't present in the Japanese Dub. I don't mind Gag Dubs like Ghost Stories, since folks are upfront in cases like that. Unlike 4Kids and their horrible dubs of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Anime.
ReplyDeleteSadly, FUNimation is following the 4K model these days. The English Dub of Miss Kobayashi is the most egregious example I've found.
The "cynical" ending make sense since Hayao Miyazaki was leading the project.
Also, you're not the only one who would've taken a different route with that ungrateful lass: https://dynasty-scans.com/system/images_images/000/009/238/original/kiki.jpg?1526954020
As entertaining as Hartman is, Mahan's performance better fits Jiji design-wise. Though that's my preference. Plus, Hartman sounded bored in a few scenes.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I don't mind later versions taking out the ad-lib. I like the idea that Kiki had grown and matured beyond the need the for a guiding spirit. However, I'll change my mind if the reasons for taking out the ad-lib and no dialogue for Jiji are what you stated. I can't abide by that cynical mind-set for this story, which is definitely a product of Hayao Miyazaki's thought process.
