Did you know that Peppa Pig used to air on Cartoon Network?
ReplyDeleteWhy would you want people to know that, mate?
DeleteI'm honestly surprised that you didn't do a minor review of Pony Life. Still life moves on. There's always more interesting cartoons to watch and review
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen this movie yet. I still haven't even finished Friendship Is Magic yet, as I only made it to the end of season 4...I think.
ReplyDeleteOn that last note, I think Sunny and Izzy would be a super cute couple.
ReplyDeleteI kinda stopped watching MLP:FIM after being disappointed with it's final season. I just don't feel anything for this franchise anymore.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen all of Friendship is Magic, but I have enjoyed what I've seen. It's fantastic. :) This movie looks ...just kind of there for me. Your comic videos have made me want to find the comics though. I have a couple of questions. First, what is a good place to start with the comics? Second, if you were tasked with coming up with an explanation for why all three pony races aren't getting along anymore, what would you do?
ReplyDeleteWell, IDW still has most of the comics through their digital storefront, and if you're still not sure, you could check the credits of said comic videos for the creators whose footage I used for it. Quite a few people have videos up on YouTube of the comics, some of which are dubbed. (It's just hard to search for them since "pony comic dub" isn't very specific.) I'd recommend reading through the main Friendship is Magic series, for sure. (I also do have a bunch of specific comics that I recommend at the end of the comics video.)
DeleteAs to your second question, well, my problem isn't really with the breakup itself, but rather the setting. The fact that G5 apparently takes place after G4, possibly centuries, still makes everything that our heroines did in G4 ring pretty hollow. Especially because they don't elaborate on much of anything that made the three pony races break up in the first place, aside from Opaline Arcana possibly having something to do with it. It also doesn't help that for whatever reason, despite being immortal, Twilight isn't there. You could argue that maybe she's not around anymore and they don't want to broach that subject, but you could put her in suspended animation or something. Granted, that would raise further questions about just how powerful this new villain is if she can contain a fully powered Twilight, but still.
So first and foremost, don't make G5 a sequel to G4. You can make it similar to G4, in fact a lot of fans would like that, and you can certainly learn from it. And if you absolutely must include parts of G4, no one ever said crossovers weren't off the table. Do what the comics did and make them two separate universes. Don't do this half-assed approach where you try and have your cake and eat it too.
Second, if you're going to elaborate on the actual breakup, I think the bones of what you have here are fine, but they need some meat. Maybe Opaline thought that friendship was just a lie ponies told themselves and that they really hated each other, because she never experienced friendship herself and thus believes it can't be real for anypony. So she studied, much like Twilight or Sunset, and found some powerful dark magic that could make her the greatest sorceress, but the only thing that could stop her would be the three crystals when brought together. So like the villain team in G4, she would use her followers to try and spread mistrust between the various pony races through rumors. You could even still do the thing they do in G5 later where her assistant ends up turning face after experiencing friendship for real while she was undercover. I think this would still work a lot better if this weren't a sequel.
I think what the problem was was that Hasbro was afraid to keep G4 going for too much longer so they could sell new toys, but they were also afraid of stepping away from it because it had made them so much money. So either keep it going, or jump over to G5, and possibly do some crossovers to make it more palatable.
