  1. I started with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory myself, having it read to me by my third grade teacher. I was sadly ten when Dahl passed, but he was one of my favorite authors growing up, despite the racism. In fact I still own a first edition of Charlie if you can believe it.

  2. Dahl and HP Lovecraft very much had the exact same problem, they were both brilliant writers but had problematic traits, Lovecraft was reportedly very paranoid but he was a man of his time. Stephen King (who is still with us) always has had problems with adaptations of his own work, most famously not liking Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining because he thought Jack Nicholson's take on Jack Torrance was 'too crazy'
