Re: the veracity of the movie's claims about candy canes: In all likelihood, they fall into the category of "Probably not true, but, well, it's a nice story." Peppermint sticks (not canes) striped in red and white have existed before the cane-shaped versions, and even after gaining a cane shape, they weren't explicitly associated with Christmas in records until almost the 1920's. But hey, the movie seems like it uses it mostly as a symbolical metaphorical thing, so... shrug?
