The Cartoon Hero vs. End of Evangelion

Originally aired January 8, 2012. Part of me thinks this episode was a mistake--but the other part thinks that I still got some decent material out of it.

And yes, Asuka is my favorite Eva character. Deal with it.

  2. This move is bad, but it's not entirely Anno's fault. He's capable of handling criticism if he's given time to reflect, but after he read the terrible reception to Evangelion's finale, he looked to Hayao Miyazaki for advice, and he convinced Anno the viewers were the problem and didn't understand, which is a stance Miyazaki has taken for much of his life.

If Anno had taken time to think and reflect, this movie may have turned out better, and Anno is an excellent creator when given the opportunity to produce a quality product. Shin Godzilla is an excellent example.

While Miyazaki is also talented, he's also a grumpy old man who despises Pop Culture and Modernisation. Which creates a rift between him and Anno, since the latter loves properties like Ultraman, which Miyazaki loathes with a passion, along with anyone who enjoys Ultraman and products like it.

Many of Miyazaki's films contain an undertone of pushing back against the modern world.

I enjoy much of his work, but I doubt I could withstand being in the same room as Miyazaki.

  3. Between this, the Rebuild movies and the series' finale, I think the latter is the best of the bunch...

Fortunately, the Manga had a great conclusion. Its follow ups are something else however...
